About This Site

My Home Office Setup covers the gear a working-from-home day actually runs on: office chairs and back support, standing desk converters, monitor arms and laptop stands, headsets and webcams for calls, and desk lighting. Everything here is written after living with the thing in one 10 by 11 foot converted bedroom, so the notes lean on the boring parts, the clamp that does not fit the desk, the cable that is six inches short, the setting that has to be redone every morning.

Setup Safety

Home office gear is heavy and it sits at head height. A monitor arm has a stated weight capacity and a stated desk thickness range, and both matter: an arm clamped to a desk it was not designed for, or loaded past its rating, can slip or shear the desk edge. Check the VESA pattern, the screen weight and the desktop thickness before you buy, and re-tighten the clamp after the first week.

Standing desk converters store energy in a gas spring or a lift mechanism. Keep fingers clear of the scissor arms while raising or lowering, do not load the top beyond its rated weight, and do not let children ride or hang off one. A converter loaded high and unevenly can tip forward when it is raised.

Office chairs use a pressurised gas cylinder. If a chair sinks on its own, the cylinder is failing and should be replaced rather than shimmed. Do not stand on an office chair to reach a shelf.

Watch the electrical load. A desk gathers a monitor, a laptop brick, a lamp, a dock and a printer onto one outlet fast. Use one surge-protected strip plugged directly into the wall, never a strip plugged into another strip, and keep cables out of walking paths or run them along the wall so nothing is a trip hazard.

On lighting and audio: position a desk lamp so it lights the page or keyboard rather than shining into your eyes or reflecting off the screen, and keep headset volume at a level where you can still hear a normal voice in the room.

Nothing here is medical advice. Comfort notes about posture, back pain or wrist strain describe one person's experience, not a clinical recommendation. If pain is persistent or getting worse, talk to a doctor or a physical therapist rather than buying a different chair.
